Bless the Broken, Early On Breeze for Kentucky Oaks

Bless the Broken and Early On, who are both training at Keeneland in preparation for the $1.5 million Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs on May 2, turned in half-mile works Wednesday morning.

Cypress Creek Equine and Madaket Stables’ Bless the Broken breezed the distance in :48 in her final tune-up for the Oaks. Winner of the Bourbonette Oaks (L) at Turfway Park on March 22, she went in tandem with 3-year-old maiden colt Bermuda Triangle and logged splits of 11.60 and 24.80 before galloping out 5 furlongs in 1:01, according to Keeneland clockers.

“It was good; we weren’t trying to do too much,” trainer Will Walden said while watching Bless the Broken cool out at the barn. “Happy with the way she is coming into the race. Hopefully she is peaking at the right moment.”

The pair went to the track immediately after the 7:30 a.m. track renovation with Genis Bracho aboard Bless the Broken.

“Genis is a unique talent,” Walden said. “I don’t deserve him, certainly did not earn him, but super glad to have him. He has been a vital member of the team for three years.”

In seven starts, Bless the Broken has two wins, two seconds and one third with $282,835 in earnings. Prior to winning the Bourbonette Oaks, she was third at Fair Grounds in the Rachel Alexandra (G2) and second in the Silverbulletday. Plans call for Bless the Broken to stay in the barn for a walk day on Thursday and ship to Churchill on Friday around 9:30 a.m. after jogging on the track.

Her name is a nod to the 2004 Rascal Flatts song “Bless the Broken Road.”

Also working Wednesday for the Kentucky Oaks was C2 Racing Stable, Ken T. Reimer, Paul Braverman, Timothy Pinch and Bradley Kent’s Early On, who breezed a half-mile in :48.40. Runner-up in the Gazelle (G2) on April 5 at Aqueduct, she has a one win, three seconds, and one third in six starts and has banked $162,200. Early On is trained by Saffie Joseph Jr.
